1.     Look at their testimonials. If they’ve got stacks of good ones then that’s a good sign. If they haven’t got any then it might be for a reason – no one will give them one or they can’t be bothered to ask for them.

2.     Ask them how long they have been in business. An established company that has been hosting for quite a few years will have systems in place to make clients happy. If they’ve only just started up then you need to ask more questions.

3.     How many clients have they got? Thousands means that they are probably a sure bet that they provide good service and are in it for the long term. If they’ve only been going for 2 months find someone more established.

4.     How easy is it to contact them? If you’ve got to submit an electronic ticket to get a response then it’s probably better to avoid them because when you’ve got an urgent question then it to be put in a queue won’t cut it. If they’ve got a telephone number, especially a freephone one – that’s good because it won’t cost you a penny – then that’s a good thing to have.

5.     Do they have backups? There could be a problem if somehow you’ve deleted a file accidentally on your website and your website doesn’t work quite right. Ask the hosting company how many backups they do? If it’s none – they don’t do any – look elsewhere.

6.     Does the hosting company website look good? A good website hosting company will want to look smart so if it’s looking tatty avoid.

7.     Is the hosting company responsive? Does it answer the phone, emails, tickets? If it’s delayed or not answered till 3 days later avoid. Good ones will answer you within 2 hours, great ones within 1 hour (during normal office hours).
