Calculating how many tiles to buy

Follow the steps below to calculate the number of tiles you will need to buy:

1. Measure the height and width of the area you need to tile.

2. Multiply the height by the width to get the surface area.

3. Repeat for each surface. Remember to include small areas such as window reveals.

4. Add together all the areas to get a figure for the total area.

5. Subtract from that total any areaas that do not need tiling (e.g. doorways).

6. Add at least 10 perscent to your final figure for wastage (broken tiles) and cutting. Then divide the surface area by the area of one of your chosen tiles to find out how may tiles you need,

Tip

If your design uses more than one type of tile, your supplier should be able to calculate for you how many tiles of each type you need. Where a relatively small number of tiles is needed it should be easier to give your supplier an accurate figure for the number of tiles you require.
